 emergency shutdown system is independent of DCS distributed control system according to the principle of safety independence, and its safety level is higher than DCS. Under normal conditions, ESD system is static and does not need human intervention. As a safety protection system, it is superior to the production process control and monitors the safety of the device in real time. Only when there is an emergency in the production unit, the protection interlock signal is directly sent by ESD without going through DCS system to protect the on-site equipment and avoid huge losses caused by hazard diffusion. With relevant data, people's judgment and operation at dangerous times are often lagging and unreliable. When operators are facing life danger, they should respond within 60s, and the probability of wrong decision-making is as high as 99.9%. Therefore, it is very necessary to set up safety interlock independent of control system, which is an important criterion for safe production. This is a remarkable feature of ESD system.Why set up ESD system independently? Of course, the general safety interlock protection function can also be realized by DCs. However, for large-scale emergency shutdown system, it shall be set separately from DCS according to the principle of safety independence. This is mainly due to the following reasons:
 Reduce the probability of simultaneous failure of control function and safety function, and will not endanger the safety protection system in case of partial failure of maintenance DCS;For large devices or rotating mechanical equipment, the faster the response speed of the emergency stop system, the better. This is conducive to protecting the equipment and avoiding the expansion of accidents; It is also helpful to distinguish the accident cause records. DCS processes a large amount of process monitoring information, so its response speed is difficult to be fast;DCS system is a process control system, which is dynamic and requires frequent manual intervention, which may cause human misoperation; ESD is static and does not need human intervention. In this way, setting ESD can avoid human misoperation.
